Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom - 2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV ✞
What is an Editorial Assessment?
An editorial assessment is a high level, professional evaluation of a book manuscript. Its purpose is to provide a high level, big picture evaluation of a manuscript, acting as a diagnostic roadmap for authors, so that they're able to determine their strengths and weaknesses before they spend time and money on editing.
Typical editorial assessment services start at $600 for a novella, and $1200 for a standard novel (about 80K words). However, we don’t want to be like the rest. We want our services to not only be affordable, but to be worthwhile. To do that, we’ve included:
-
Payment plans
-
A chapter by chapter analysis
-
A research document

Assessment Elements

Our editorial assessments are broken up into 24 elements. This allows us to dig deeper when writing our editorial assessments and organize our thoughts more accurately.
01
Characters
Characters are what drive the story. Or at least, they should. In order to have a great story, you need great characters.
03
Plot
Plot = substance. Does your story have substance?
02
Conflict
There are many types of conflict. But it's how you use that conflict that determines which way your story will go.
04
Resolution
Not all stories resolve with a happy ending. Some don't resolve at all. How does your story end?
05
Structure
Structure is just as important as plot. Without structure, the plot becomes confusing and the information unreadable.
07
Plot Twists
Plot twists are the mighty explosions that impact your story in a way that keeps people talking. However, if not used responsibly, they have the power to wreck your story in a way that may be deemed irrepairable.
06
Pacing
Pacing can make or break your story. Don't let bad pacing cost you your audience.
08
Worldbuilding
Where will you take us? Where will we go?
09
Genre(s)
Genre is the little box we put our story in and is usually the first thing that determines whether or not someone will read it.
11
Book Title
A book's title goes hand and hand with its cover. Give them a story, without giving them the story.
13
Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing makes the plot twists feel earned.
15
Tone and Atmosphere
Readers want to feel something. The tone and atmosphere should fit the story that you're trying to tell.
17
Point of View
This includes 1st-3rd person, as well as character point of view.
19
Overall Storytelling Ability
How good are your storytelling skills?
21
Strengths
What makes your story strong?
23
Advice
We're always in your corner, ready to give you any advice that we feel may help push your story along.
10
Book Cover
They say don't judge a book by its cover, but the cover is one of the main reasons that we picked up the book in the first place.
12
Overall Enjoyability
Not everyone will like your book. And that's ok. Don't base your credibility of being an author on someone else's opinions.
14
Setting(s)
Arguably one of the most overlooked, supportive layers a story can have.
16
Theme(s)
What's the overall message that you're trying to tell the reader?
18
Marketability
Everything has a market. But does your story fit the market that you're trying to sell it in?
20
Book Synopsis
After the cover, this is a potential reader's next stop to determine whether or not they'll read your book.
22
Weaknesses
What makes your story weak?
24
Chapter Hooks & Endings
Chapters should always start and end with a bang.
